Afternights is a group between me and my two friends, David Braden and Kevin Emery. We did a lot of messing around and finally recorded an album, A Cool Night in the Pumpkin Patch, in 2003. The album is a hodge-podge of sounds, styles, and approaches. We sampled our own instruments to create unusual melodies (the title track), borrowed odd samples from our music collections and the internet to remix our own songs (A Warm Pumpkin Day, many others), ran our recordings through a virtual blender in Soundforge, chopping, reversing, inverting (Encounters), tried our hand at hard rock and swing (About the Beautiful and La De Da), performed a Scottish fiddle tune to a techno groove (MacDonald’s March), covered Lou Reed with distorted violins and a fretless bass (Venus in Furs), dallied with acoustic folk-rock (Same Old Memory), and wrote a very weird and memorable song, Captain of the Purple Grass. All three of us contributed vocals and arrangements; David mostly played guitar, I played the bass parts, violin, and some guitar, and Kevin covered piano and percussion. While it is an amateur work, I still listen to this with great fondness as it is a record of a very creative period of our lives. I hope you enjoy it!
